Investment Takes Teacher Training to the Next Level

ASU’s College of Teacher Education and Leadership has received its largest ever gift—a five-year, $18.85-million investment from entrepreneur and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford—to partner with Teach For America to bring major substantive changes to the way ASU recruits, selects, and prepares future K-12 teachers. This program, known as the Sanford Education Project, will help to transform the work of the College to become even more effective. On Feb. 1, CTEL Dean Mari Koerner spoke about the investment to host Ted Simons on the KAET public affairs show “Horizon”. View the interview.
Grant Funds Early Literacy Partnership
A federal Early Reading First grant was awarded to the Southwest Institute for Children and Families (SWI) to fund a program called, “Pump Up the Volume in Preschool” last fall. The program is a partnership of the Gallup McKinley County Schools, Navajo Department of Diné Education, SWI and ASU. Professors James Christie, with the Mary Lou Fulton Institute and Graduate School of Education, and Jay Blanchard, with the College of Teacher Education and Leadership, will oversee the project. “The goal is simple,” Blanchard said. “The project aims to ensure that Navajo preschool children enter kindergarten with the literacy skills needed to have a successful first year of school.”
Cool Web site for ELL Geography Buffs
Looking for strategies to teach geoliteracy to English language learners? You’ll find an online workshop for teachers of most levels who want to reach non-English speaking children using geography. Visit the site for lesson plans, audio-presentations, and other resources for teaching geography integrated with reading and writing for English language learners. The Web site is the work of CTEL faculty members Elizabeth Hinde and Margarita Jimenez-Silva, along with Ronald Dorn, faculty member from ASU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Gale Ekiss of the Arizona Geographic Alliance and funded by the National Geographic Society Education Foundation.

Professor Named Outstanding Alumnus
CTEL Associate Professor Donald Blumenfeld-Jones was honored with the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Health and Human Performance of UNC at Greensboro, where he earned an MFA in Dance in 1985. The award was established in 1976 and is “the highest honor given by our School to outstanding graduates.” Blumenfeld-Jones recently established the CTEL ARTs program—Arts-based Reflective Teaching—a unique program for students studying to be elementary teachers.
Results Not Typical
The “Harvard Educational Review” featured CTEL Assistant Professor Margarita Jimenez-Silva and her siblings in an article entitled, “ Results Not Typical: One Latino Family’s Experiences in Higher Education.”
Recognition for Special Service
The Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities recognized the “Extraordinary Service” of CTEL Professor Stan Zucker, longtime editor of the Division’s flagship journal, “ Education and Training in Developmental Disabilities.” [pdf] “Stan has given tireless dedication to the field, and to special education programs at ASU,” said Kathleen Puckett, CTEL’s interim associate dean and past president of the Council for Exceptional Children.

| The Future is Looking Up. |
The CTEL community celebrated the achievements of 500 graduates at ASU’s Commencement and the CTEL Convocation. The convocation, held on Dec. 17 at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, hosted close to 500 graduates and 7,000 family members and friends. It was the first ever combined convocation celebrating the achievements of our graduates who attend all four ASU campuses, at school district programs statewide and online.
