A Busy Open Days Weekend in New England
The last weekend in June proved to be a great opportunity to visit Open Days gardens. Sixty-two gardens from Bainbridge Island to Martha’s Vineyard all eagerly awaited visitors. Laura Palmer, director of the Open Days program, traveled some 500 miles across New England, visiting thirteen different gardens in three days. She submitted this report from the field.

New Lease on Life for Western Hills Nursery
The future of Western Hills Nursery, located near Occidental in western Sonoma County, California, is much more promising with the purchase of the property on July 9 by Chris and Tim Szybalski. The Szybalskis were introduced to Western Hills a few years ago when investigating nursery opportunities; Chris Szybalski is co-owner of Westbrae Nursery in Berkeley.

New $100,000 Challenge Grant to Help Complete Endowment Campaign
The Garden Conservancy is delighted to announce that long-time Conservancy patron and friend Mrs. Dorrance H. Hamilton of Philadelphia has issued a generous challenge grant to help complete the Conservancy’s Campaign to Save America’s Exceptional Gardens. It’s another example of her philanthropic leadership and support.

Zero to 600 in One Year
When the Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum decided to launch a membership program in 2009, their immediate goal was to “bring together a base of around one hundred known supporters, and share a wonderful piece of history with the Knoxville community” according to Executive Director Steve Seifried. One year later, almost 600 members are in place, supporting the garden’s ambitious plans to restore its historic landscape and create a beautiful urban oasis.

New Garden Manager at the Ruth Bancroft Garden
Charlotte Blome joined the Ruth Bancroft Garden as garden manager in May, a position initially supported by the Garden Conservancy’s Anne and Frank Cabot Fund for Project Gardens. Charlotte has a background in fine gardening and is a trained artist and floral designer.

Rocky Hills Garden Party Celebrates Recovery from Winter Storms
Nearly one hundred Friends of Rocky Hills and guests joined Mrs. Henriette Suhr for the annual Rocky Hills Garden Party in Mount Kisco, New York, to celebrate the good work and achievements of the past year. In spite of winter damage from severe storms, which took down many mature trees, the gardens looked lovelier than ever.

Horticulturists, Gardeners, and Designers Make Way for Succulents!
Why do 130 gardeners attend a day-long seminar on plants? For the devout, it is a day of immersion—an opportunity to think about plants in good company. Make Room for Succulents in Your Garden, the latest seminar in the Ruth Bancroft Horticultural Series presented by the Garden Conservancy and the Ruth Bancroft Garden, was truly such a day out.
