The Answer: Trance Your Way Thin

A friend confessed that she frequently, throughout the day and sometimes throughout the night, visits her refrigerator, tugging on its door – opening and closing it – looking for an answer.  Sometimes she looks in the vegetable bin – sometimes in the egg crate or in the freezer. She even looks under the ice trays.  On occasion, she gets down low on her knees and peers behind the bottles of ketchup, mustard and mayo.  But to no avail. 

There are no answers in her refrigerator. 
If you hare having difficulty receiving the ‘answer,' here are few techniques that may help you to dig a little deeper.  You may be surprised to find that you uncover a gem!

Automatic Writing
All you need is a pen and paper, or if you are more comfortable, a keyboard!  Place the writing utensil in your hand at the top left-hand corner of the paper, or place your fingers on the keyboard.

Take in a deep cleansing breath and exhale. Suggest to yourself that your hand may begin to write.  Imagine that the information that comes forth will give you a better understanding of who you are and give you insight into what changes you would like to make.  Perhaps the information that flows forward will offer an insight that you can use to move towards your compelling future.

And then just write … Let your mind go where it likes.  Your unconscious will take over and will send messages and information from your mind, through your arm and into your fingertips.  Be patient.  The more you practice this technique, the more comfortable you are with it, the more likely you are to receive your answer.

Your Inner Television Screen
Find a comfortable and quiet place. Take in a cleansing breath.  Exhale.  And again. 
Project a large screen flat television screen in your mind.  Ask yourself what you would like to change.  Imagine yourself in your ‘changed’ state.  What do you see? What do you smell?  What do you feel? What season is it?  Where are you?  Are there other people in your movie?  Make your new state as real as possible. The more you practice, the clearer your vision.

Into the 'lite' . . .

Pineapple Baked Beans from Sara M., NJ

Ingredients - 2 (15 oz) cans Baked Beans * 1 (15 oz.) can pineapple, crushed, in its own juice * 1 major squirt of ketchup * one major tablespoon of dijon mustard * 1/4 cup brown sugar, light * 1 package hot dogs, 97% fat-free (Hebrew National - only 50 calories each) sliced up any way you like it!  * Turkey bacon (optional)

Instructions - Combine all ingredients in a 2-qt casserole dish. Bake for 45 minutes. Optional: in separate skillet, fry up turkey bacon and crumble on top

Dear OLoWL~ I was doing  great on my weight loss journey until I got a night job in a bakery. I was 8 pounds away from my goal weight, but now I am back up to 18 pounds to go.  It has been very hard staring at the pastries, donuts, breads, rolls, muffins and bagels in the face night after night. I have had to buy bigger clothes, and I am miserable! Help please!!!  Sincerely, The Fluffy Baker

Hi Fluffy Baker ~ I sympathize and can imagine that the barrage of cakes, bagels and rolls is a lot to deal with but - YOU ARE WORTH IT.  Remember - there is no such thing as will power, only want power - and you want to lose weight.   I permanently removed 55 pounds over 5 years ago (close to 6 now) and the best gift I gave myself was that at the end of the day, I like myself and am not beating myself up. Love yourself and don't give into the pastries.  You are worth the effort and deserve to be happy. ~ OLofWL

Hi OLofWL ~ I had reached my weight loss goal (150) and actually lost an additional 5 lbs. I went from a size 12  to an 8. I am a tight 10 now and would like to get back to an 8. In September, my husband and I went to Hawaii for our anniversary. I ate and drank whatever I wanted. We returned from our vacation and I can’t seem to get back on track.

Dear Jackie ~  Life happens, celebrations happen, vacations happen and we all fall off the wagon.  Those who win get back on the wagon, over and over and over again. You had your 'fun.' Now get back on the wagon.  That's right, NOW.  Not in the morning, NOW.  And remember that being kind to yourself and feeling good about yourself is the ultimate goal.  It's not about the pounds permanently removed.  They are the by-product. Hello OLofWL ~ [Regarding last week's Kick] the best way I lose my blubber is with FUN.  As an office worker who sits 40 hours a week, I am always looking to go on a hike, a walk, a bike ride, a swim, or go roller skating with my brand new quads (not roller blades).  I love to sled down a snowy hill on a plastic kid sled, then run up the hill with the sled.  Or, I snowshoe up and down the hills at the golf course down the road.  I didn't jump rope as a kid--I was very sick and sedentary with asthma for the first 10 years--but now I jump and jump with my bright red jump rope.  And when I dance, it's just me and the music.  ~ Happy Spring!  Thanks for your fun, inspirational forum! ~ Heidi from Springfield, MA. - 39 years old - 65 pounds lost and kept off for 3 years and counting

What is a creative act of weight loss?

It’s ANYTHING that you do that feels good and feeds your soul, other than eating (the ‘bad’ stuff - in excess - when not hungry).

Knitting.  And crochet.  It is impossible to eat while your hands are busy doing something else, and these activities produce wonderful soft, warm, practical items which can be enjoyed by yourself or any lucky recipient you choose.  If you have no family to knit or crochet for, look online for many, many charitable organizations that are eager to accept your donations of hats, scarves, mittens, blankets etc.  Or you can make something free-form and fun that has no purpose at all; it's your choice and either way the craft of your hands will be a blessing to you.  The simple act of engaging in a repetitive craft also calms you down, makes you feel happier and more centered, and frees your brain from everyday worries and concerns. - from Luanne R.
