Motivational Musing
How ill-mannered are you?
After I did a bit of research on etiquette, I was shocked to learn that my family is made up of a bunch of ill-mannered heathens. How does your family measure up?
One should …
- arrive at least 10 minutes early unless otherwise specified. (Whatever happened to fashionably late?)
- pass food from the left to right. (So if someone is on my left, should I pass it around the table?)
- pass both the salt and pepper together, even if only asked for one of them.
- place food item directly in front of the person asking for it, rather than handing it to them (hand-to-hand). (No tossing the roll across the table and saying ‘head’s up?’)
- never even think to grab a roll out of the breadbasket as it’s being passed to someone else. (Are you kidding? I’d never get a piece. It’s every man for himself here.)
- serve food from the left; remove from the right.
- put the butter or spread on your plate before you spread it on your food. In other words, do not take butter and directly spread it on the bread.
- scoop the food away from you. (I do that with soup, but I didn’t know you’re supposed to do that with all food!)
- taste your food before seasoning it.
- never blow on your food to cool it. If it’s hot, you just wait for it to cool.
- keep elbows off the table. Keep your left hand in your lap unless you are using it.
- not talk with your mouth full. Chew with your mouth closed.
- cut only enough food for the next mouthful. Eat in small bites and slowly.
- not blow your nose at the dinner table. Excuse yourself to visit the restroom. (What if I have a cold? I might spend the evening in the restroom.)
- wash hands before returning to the dining room.
- cover your mouth if you cough with your napkin to stop the spread of germs and muffle the noise.
- not use a toothpick or apply makeup at the table. (Even we’re not so uncouth as to apply make up at the dinner table, especially the boys.)
- stand when a woman leaves the table or returns to sit (For the men). (As if!)

Dear OLofWL ~ Regarding Girl Scout cookies... (last week's weighty confession):
One troop in our area (Austin, TX) gave people the option of buying cookies without taking with them. Instead the troop donated the cookies to a local non-profit that provides free after school care for low income kids. So as an added bonus, your "cookie purchase" helped TWO non-profits! Way to go!
I love the Girl Scouts. Both my daughters & I were Girl Scouts but that doesn't mean we have to eat their cookies. This year (now that I am part of the OLofWL crowd) I gave the girls who were selling cookies a donation and didn't take any cookies! If I didn't have them, I couldn't eat them! The Girl Scouts were helped and temptation was removed! THANKS!!! - Chris C. in Austin (part of The Crossing class)
Dear Chris ~ BRILLIANT! Give twice! A no-excuses approach to the cookies. So, everyone buy and give twice, but not to yourself. Got it?! Thanks for writing in. Say "hey" to the Austin Kick in the Tush Club Chapter! ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL ~ I bought a cute pair of Capri's that I could barely squeeze my fat butt into, and then tried them on at least once a week as I worked at my diet. It reminded me of why I wanted to lose weight and it motivated me as they began to fit better. Now, a little over 1 year later, the capris are too big and I have lost 25 lbs. I am still working slowly but surely on the other 20. When my motivation gets low I go back to the "1 size too small" plan and it helps. ~ Karen
Dear Karen ~ Congratulations on your 25 pounds permanently removed, your big capris, and your resourceful attitude! Bravo!!!! Keep up the great work and let us know how it goes! What are you going to do with those capris??? ~ OLofWL

Creative Acts of Weight Loss
What is a creative act of weight loss?
It’s ANYTHING that you do that feels good and feeds your soul, other than eating (the ‘bad’ stuff - in excess - when not hungry).
Pat W.'s Creative Act of Weight Loss: I have lost 21 pounds since January 1st being creative! I decided to de-clutter my house by selling stuff on ebay.....how liberating! I managed to acquire a little money this way, and now have enough money to make jewelry! I have been creatively keeping my hands busy without shoving food in my face. All that sitting has made me want to move more, so what do I do? I walk around craft stores, of course! Thank you for inspiring me!
Wow! Would sure love to see some photos of your work! Sounds amazing and way longer lasting than a box of cookies and extraordinarily fulfilling!
What creative act of weight loss have you committed? Write me!

"When I called on Janice, I had been stuck at the same weight for close to three months. I had reached that plateau that many reach, where one loses their footing on the road to healthy weight loss. Allowing myself to take a long three month break from my diet when Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled around and I got off track. During the 4 weeks that I worked with Janice, I lost 7 pounds and since then, have been much better adhering to my weight loss plan. Things make sense again. I felt supported, listened to, and encouraged by our four talks. It was a gift to myself speaking to Janice and I recommend her coaching to anyone who wants more support and guidance and help." ~ Rosemary R., Greenwich Village
"Janice Taylor has been a truly inspirational weight loss coach. Through her creative insight I have found my "artists' soul", making the journey to my new lifestyle fulfilling and utterly satisfying. And I permanently removed over 40 pounds of excess weight! " L~ Brooklyn. NY
