"Peanut" Widell
July Pet of the Month

Peanut_Widell_July09_POM

Hi, my name is “Peanut” and I’m the July Pet of the Month. I’m a two year-old domestic short hair Tabby who was adopted from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in 2006. I have an older brother named “Snipper” who is also from the SPCA.

If you ask “Snipper” about me, he’ll tell you that I am a pain in the neck, but he’ll also tell you that he loves me unconditionally! I love to cuddle in my mom’s lap and even get to sleep on my favorite spot, mom’s head!

Beat the Heat

Heatstroke (hyperthermia) is a very serious, life-threatening epidemic during the summer months. It occurs when pets are unable to cool themselves. Since dogs andbeach_dog cats do not have sweat glands, it is very difficult for them to lower their body temperature once it has increased. Most owners do not recognize the symptoms of heatstroke until it is far into its developmental stages.

Signs your pet has overheated:
  • Temperature above 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Rapid Panting
  • Bright Red Tongue
  • Thick Salvia
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Depression
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Most affects of heatstroke can be reversed if the conditions are caught early enough. However, if it is left untreated, your pet can experience long-term effects (heart failure, kidney failure, brain damage and even death).

If you notice any of these symptoms, call our hospital immediately. DO NOT apply very cold water to your pet, because the effects can be counterproductive. For more information on heatstroke you can reach Largo Veterinary Hospital at (727) 584-8370.
