Liberty, Justice, and the U.S. Supreme Court
The Foundation’s 2006 symposium, beginning at 12:30 PM, Saturday October 21, at Boston College’s Robsham Theater, features a series of timely and provocative conversations presenting some of the nation's most prominent legal scholars, jurists, and journalists. The symposium, which is free to the public, will consist of a series of three moderated conversations, each focusing on a different but related aspect of the theme.   more info and to register
Call for Proposals: Cultural Economic Development Grants
In an effort to meet the needs of the humanities community and stimulate economic development in the Commonwealth, MFH supports innovative humanities projects that have the capacity to “revitalize communities, stimulate income, create or enhance jobs, and attract tourism.” Cultural Economic Development (CED) grants of up to $10,000 each will be made in FY 2007 beginning with the November 1, 2006 deadline (drafts, which are required, are due Oct. 16).  The Foundation’s regular application deadlines and procedures apply. Mass Moments Teachers' Features
The Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities is pleased to announce the launch of Teachers' Features, a new section of the Mass Moments website designed especially for K-12 educators. Developed by the Mass Moments editorial staff, in consultation with classroom teachers, Teachers' Features contains three units for high school students, two for the upper elementary level, and suggestions for using the site in third grade classrooms.  All of the components are self-contained to give teachers maximum flexibility. Everything is searchable and printable. 
Each unit includes:
*Brief introduction that answers the question,
“Why teach this?”

*Essential question
*Relevant Massachusetts state standard(s)
*Several lessons with activities, suggested resources, links, and more

Civil Rights Symposium
Power and Protest: The Civil Rights Movement in Boston, 1960-1968, a public symposium, will be held at the J.F.K. Presidential Library on November 3 & 4. Liberty and Freedom History Lecture

David Hackett Fischer will explore the different meanings of "liberty" and "freedom" and discuss how these ideas have changed throughout the nation’s history in his lecture: "Liberty and Freedom: Many Ideas, One Tradition.”

Commonwealth Humanities Lecture Nominations

The Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, in partnership with MassINC, will select one outstanding Massachusetts humanities scholar or writer to deliver the fourth annual Commonwealth Humanities Lecture.  This honor recognizes a significant contribution to our understanding of public life or civic affairs in the Commonwealth.

Nominations may be submitted via e-mail; fax 413-584-8454 or by regular mail to Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, 66 Bridge St, Northampton, MA  01060.  Please provide the name and address of the individual you are nominating and tell us why he or she should be honored with this award.

Nominees must live or work in Massachusetts. The lectureship carries a $5,000 stipend. The deadline for nominations is Friday, December 15, 2006.
