Robert "Bob" Rhodes, chairman of the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission (JEDC), was recently awarded with the 2007 Thomas Klechak Downtown Development Award at the annual NAIOP awards dinner. The Klechak Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions resulting in a significant impact on the continued development of downtown Jacksonville.
JEDC Executive Director Ron Barton presented the award to Mr. Rhodes noting that, "Bob Rhodes has been an untiring advocate for downtown, volunteering his time and intellect to make downtown the special place we all desire."
Dr. Thomas "Lew" Klechack was first honored with this award in his name for his vision and devotion for over 15 years to the revitalization of the downtown area while chairman of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA). This award symbolizes the epitome of public service to downtown Jacksonville. Other past recipients include: Jim Citrano, Frank Nero and John Welch.
Chairman Rhodes is of counsel with Foley & Lardner LLP and is recognized as one of Florida’s leading legal professionals in land use law, environmental law and real estate development. He has been an influential player in the local and state development arena for many years and served as general counsel for The St. Joe Company from 1997 to 2003, and as executive vice president from 2003 to 2005. Rhodes’ longtime leadership within the JEDC and Downtown Vision, Inc (DVI), along with his most recent involvement in the development of the Downtown Action Plan, has proven his influence on downtown development.
This was the first year that the Klechak Award was given in conjunction with the NAIOP annual awards. The Northeast Florida Chapter of NAIOP provides communication, networking and business opportunities for all real estate related professionals; a forum for continuing education; and promotes effective public policy, through its grassroots network, to create, protect and enhance property values.

| JEDC Commissioner Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., son of famous boxer, Joe Louis |
The JEDC Office of Film & Television, Joe Louis Barrow, Jr. and The First Tee of Jacksonville hosted a special screening of the HBO Documentary "Joe Louis: America's Hero.....Betrayed," on February 21st. It was a documentary based on the legendary boxer and his tremendous impact on our then-segregated nation.
The special revealed how the grandson of slaves became one of the greatest heavyweights of all time, served as an iconic figure in World War II, and later met numerous setbacks with dignity and class. Joe Louis Barrow – who became known as the "Brown Bomber" – was America’s first true crossover athlete, and as the first black sports star, was admired by both black and white fans.
The high-profile list of interviewees who discussed Louis’ impact in the documentary included: his son, Joe Louis Barrow, Jr.; former President Jimmy Carter; poet Maya Angelou; actor-comedian Jerry Lewis; comedian-activist Dick Gregory; Pete and Louis Marciano, brothers of boxer Rocky Marciano; writer Gay Talese; U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel; and other notable writers, biographers and historians.
"I am extremely pleased with the HBO film," said Joe Louis Barrow, Jr. "It not only really portrays my father’s dominance in the ring, but also his broader impact throughout society."
"This was a great opportunity for Jacksonville to see a documentary on this legendary athlete," said Mayor John Peyton. "The fact that his son, Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., works and lives in our city gave the screening even more of an impact and adds a personal touch for local viewers."
The HBO Documentary debuted on HBO on Saturday, February 23 during Black History Month.
