CREATIVE ACTS of WEIGHT LOSS
What is a creative act of weight loss?
It’s ANYTHING that you do that feels good and feeds your soul, other than eating (the ‘bad’ stuff).
Tush Kickin’ Creative Acts of Weight Loss (guaranteed to melt fat)
1. Take a hot bath and imagine that the fat cells are melting into the hot water. Bathtubs are great. When you lie in them, all your fat falls to the side and behind you. It’s the only place where my stomach is flat!
2. Create a pair of invisible goggles that will obstruct your vision when within 50 feet of a bakery! Yup, they’re invisible – only supply needed is your imagination!*
3. Visit your nearest dog run. If you don’t have a dog, borrow one. It’s a great place to meet people!
4. Grow herbs. An outdoor garden or an indoor garden. The smell is incredible and using fresh herbs is a heavenly treat.
5. Pull weeds. If you’ve ever had any kind of garden or yard that was overcome with weeds, you’ll know what I mean when I say that pulling weeds is very satisfying. Yank out frustration, anger – it’s a good way to get your energy pumping.
6. Mambo Italiano. Do the mambo to Rosemary Clooney’s rendition. You’ll burn calories while dancing and you’ll feel happy, too. Those endorphins will be pumping, wildly!
7. Bowl … put a team together! Design pink jackets and call yourself the OLofWL Lucky Strikes.
8. Read the menu as if it is a poem. Garlic bread, lightly toasted. Chocolate meringue for dessert. My tongue licks my lips - clean. (Then order ‘lite.’)
9. Sing. Loud! Let your frustrations out while you belt out a song.
10. Dye your hair! Something outrageous. Something bright. Be bold.

Righteous Recipe
Garlic Breath Chicken and Broccoli (serves four with a nice salad) from Sandra S., Clermont, FL. - Thanks, Sandra! Delicious and easy, too. Woo Hoo!
Ingredients: One whole boneless, skinless chicken breast (diced into 1/2" pieces) * One bunch fresh broccoli (cut into medium pieces) * 3-4 cloves garlic sliced or minced (Are you brave? Throw in more!) * Healthy-style pasta rigatoni approximately 6 ounces cooked al-dente * Olive oil
Instructions: Prepare all ingredients and get out a large stir-fry pan.* Cook pasta and drain well. * When pasta is almost done, heat pan and add about 1 tablespoon olive oil, continue to heat. * Stir-fry chicken and garlic. * When chicken is uniformly cooked (no pink areas), add broccoli and continue to stir fry. * If ingredients too dry add just a little chicken broth or olive oil sparingly. * Add pasta, stir again, put lid on pan and let sit on low heat about 5 to 10 minutes. * Enjoy!

Chewing the Fat
Dear OLofWL ~ My mom is a big fan of yours and sent me to your website to have a look around. I am a 30 year old woman with 3 kids (one under a year old) and the reason I want to lose weight is because my feet keep turning numb and my doctor said I am on the fast track for diabetes. I am about 60 pounds over weight. I am having a hard time going on a diet because I am very confused.
So, to help with my weight loss mission (and as instructed by my doctor), I joined a gym and I go regularly. I attend 3x a week, and I am there about an hour to an hour and a half each session. I have personal trainers there that make a plan for me and revise it every 3 months. I have had 2 revisions, and I am due for a 3rd soon. Since I joined last summer, I have lost NO weight...actually, I have gone up about 15 pounds. My waist has come in about an inch and a half, but the rest of my measurements have pretty much stayed the same. I am not understanding why.
In theory...if you are a pc potato and don't change your diet but do change your exercise routine...should you not LOSE weight?? Now I am completely lost and confused...not only do I not know how to diet but now I can't run off the fat either...I just don't understand!! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Cyn
Dear Cyn ~ First, Cynthia! BRAVO. You are working out. That is a major accomplishment. Pat yourself on the back and use it to propel yourself to the next step. I totally understand your frustrations. You deserve to wake up lighter, but as you can see, exercise alone won't do it. What it boils down to is that you burn more calories than you eat. Exercise may help you burn a few more calories but it's not going to burn off the entire enchilada. You should either go to your local weight loss center (a Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers type of place) and see what diet they follow or to your doctor and get a simply 1200 to 1400 calorie per day plan.
I tell my weight loss coaching clients that unless they're exercising like an athlete, they should consider exercise their insurance policy. It covers that BLTs! (Bites, licks and tastes) that you 'forget' to count.
Here's some information that may help to clear your confusion: A pound is equal to 3,500 calories. In theory, this means that if you want to lose weight you need to cut your calorie intake. If you were to eat 250 calories less per day, you would lose approximately 1/2 pound per week. A 500 calorie per day cut would help you to permanently remove about 1 pound a week. This is an approximation, because each body works a little differently.
Even though exercise often doesn't make a dramatic difference on the bathroom scale, it tones, makes you feel happy (releases endorphins), is good for the heart, and clears your head. So, don't stop exercising. Keep it up! You're so much the better for it, and you are burning extra calories, but not enough for it to counteract the way you are eating.
Lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein, dairy ... a balanced plan is the way to go! I hope that helps! Please say HEY to your mom for me and thank her for spreading the word (and the icing!) ... and thank YOU for writing! Please let us know how it goes. ~ OLofWL with you every inch of the weigh!

Dear OLofWL ~ I think that people will keep their motivation for resolutions if instead of referring to it as a New Year Resolution thinking of it as A New Life Resolution! Because in fact that is what it is. Small steps to a long term success! - Shannon
Dear Shannon ~ Thank you for your wonderful insight. It is indeed a new life! Rejoice! ~ OLofWL

Creative Acts of Weight Loss
What is a creative act of weight loss?
It’s ANYTHING that you do that feels good and feeds your soul, other than eating (the ‘bad’ stuff - in excess - when not hungry).
The fun creative part of the healthy me has made a commitment to myself to walk at least 3 miles a week. I live next to a walking trail that is exactly one mile long. To make it fun, I started an on-line -illustrated blog! I practice mindfulness on my walk and have found it enjoyable and something I look forward to.
