Weighty Confession

Forgive Me for I Have Sinned

I spent last week at the home of a (skinny) friend. She keeps packages of dark and milk mini-Dove chocolates in the freezer at all times. I ate about 30 pieces, even woke up in the middle of the night to go downstairs and feed. I didn't just eat the dark chocolates, either!

All Is Forgiven. Move On.

The Greatest Love of All

Self-love and weight loss go hand-in-hand, or thigh-to-thigh, if you will.

I know how it feels not to like myself and to lead a life of compromise. It’s a big, fat drag.  And now I know how it feels to like – even love myself.  I promise you, it’s a whole lot better and there’s no pastry, chocolate bar, or basket of bread that’s worth it putting self-love on the back-burner.

Love is an art that requires conviction, faith and daily practice.
Self-love is within you, always available – ready to comfort and embrace.

Fully accept yourself this St. Valentine’s Day.  You deserve to love yourself, no matter your size, hairstyle (I had the ultimate bad cut a few weeks ago and struggled with self-love.),or  I.Q. (my brother was the smart one!).

Five Fabulous Tips on How to Exercise Your Self-Love Muscle

1. Write out a list of all the things you like about yourself.  If you are short on ideas, ask a couple of good and kind friends.  (Caution: steer clear of critical relatives.)

2. To get your day headed in the right direction, start the morning with a few self-loving affirmations.  Write them first and then say them aloud.  “My loving energy flows through me and out into the universe, connecting with all the Gods and Goddesses of love.” (Okay, a little over the top. I like a touch of drama.)

3. Every night jot down three things that you are grateful for. “I am grateful that I love myself.”

4. Praise and compliment yourself as often as possible. Criticism is soul crushing. Praise builds.  “Wow, that chocolate smoothie I just whipped up was awesome.  I am great.” (see Chocolate Smoothie recipe below) “And woo hoo! Girlfriend, look at yourself in those tight-ass jeans.”

5. Look adoringly at yourself in the mirror.  Accept yourself just the way you are.   No kidding, you are really fabulous. No need to wait. Love yourself NOW.

Instructions: Cook spaghetti in pot of water, per package instructions, until al dente. * In deep pan, heat 1 tsp. of the extra virgin olive oil over medium heat.  * Add minced garlic, mushrooms, salt, and pepper. * Cook 1 minute without stirring. ) Stir mixture, cover, and turn down to medium-low heat. *  Cook another 2 minutes, stir, and re-cover. * After 2 more minutes, remove cover and add tomatoes. * Cook on medium heat, uncovered, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes or until liquid from tomatoes is approximately half. * Add shrimp, combining thoroughly. * Cook another 2 minutes or until shrimp are heated throughout. * Do not overcook shrimp. * Drain spaghetti and toss with remaining 1/2 tsp. of the extra virgin olive oil. * Serve on plate with shrimp-mushroom-tomato combination on top.

Chewing the Fat

Dear OLWL ~ Cyn made me think of a very undiagnosed reason some women can't lose weight. Especially young women post-pregnancy...this is when my THYROID stopped working properly. It's the same for lots of women, and doctors don't routinely check for it, unless they've been instructed. Symptoms of low-thyroid are: inability to lose weight, lethargy, fatigue, mood swings, depression, brain fog, others. See about.com's thyroid page, for a great intro on the problem. This is worth a mention on your site. Thanks so much for keeping it 'light!" ~ Heather

Dear Heather ~ Thanks for your response to Cyn's email and the head's up regarding about.com.  I took a look and there are several articles on their site that talk about thyroid.  Here's the link for those who are interested!  about.com Into the 'lite' ... OLofWL

* * *

Dear OLofWL ~ I've enjoyed your KITT Club newsletter for several months now.  I always find something to smile about, not to mention the all-too-familiar slips and slides. I have had some experience with the exercise/weight loss question, so I can understand Cyn's dilemma.

I was a member of a program here run by a doctor who was a Bariatric specialist (one of only 2 in Canada).  The program supplied a nutritionist, a trainer specializing in dealing with those whose weight problems were complicated (if not caused) by underlying medical problems, and medical personnel to assist everyone in finding food solutions and safe exercise routines that would help you lose weight at a safe rate, and teach you how to judge portions etc. wisely.  I lost 25 pounds (well over the magic 10% of my body weight) and 25 inches over 22 weeks (and have kept the weight off for 2 years without measuring, counting calories etc.).

Now, the point of the exercise question.  I learned that it takes a tremendous amount of high intensity aerobic type exercise to burn off the calories.  Not only that, but as you lose the weight, your metabolism changes and your reward for 10 weeks of exercise and diet was a need to reduce your calorie intake even more to continue losing.  Definitely 'cruel and unusual punishment'  Reward yourself with the virtuous thought that diet alone won't strength your muscles (including the most important one - your heart!)

As my doctor summed it up: to lose weight, 99% of us need to both 'eat less & move more'. Darn!  A Valentine to you  and all those who share the KITT Club attitude! ~ Janice (yes, really, Janice)

Dear Janice ~ Thanks for your insightful email.  There's just no way around it, huh.  Exercise, calories in - calories out - and love all around.  Happy St. V. Day to y'all!!!! ~ OLofWL
