Cardew and Szarejko Earn National Merit Semifinalist Recognition

Seniors Ryan Cardew and Andrew Szarejko were selected as National Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. These students received this recognition based on their PSAT scores taken in October of their junior years. More than 1.5 million juniors in over 21,000 schools took the qualifying test, but only 16,000 students scored in a range to be recognized as a National Merit Semifinalist. When isolated to the state of Florida, a National Merit Semifinalist represents less than 1% of the state’s high school seniors. Students selected as semifinalists had index ranges from a low of 60 to a high of 240. Cardew and Szarejko had index scores of 212 and 213. As you can see, they were very near the top.

Ryan and Andrew are now eligible to complete an application to earn the National Merit Finalist recognition. The National Merit Finalist recognition will be based on their outstanding academic records, leadership in the school and community, SAT scores, and written essays. CCHS congratulates Ryan and Andrew on this outstanding achievement and wishes them the best in the next step in this recognition. Approximately 8,200 scholarships worth more than 35 million dollars will be awarded to the National Merit Finalists.

Four CCHS Students Earn Highest Mark on AP Exams

Ryan Cardew, Andrew Szarejko, Marcos Quiñones (seniors) and Trey Howard (Class of ’08) all scored the highest mark possible on Advanced Placement (AP) exams they took last Spring. Ryan earned a 5 (the highest possible mark) in both Biology and Spanish, Andrew scored a 5 in Biology and Marcos scored a 5 in Spanish. Graduate Trey Howard earned his top score in AP Art.

CCHS encourages students to take Advanced Placement and Dual Credit classes when possible. By doing this, students can get a head start in doing college level work (and receiving college credit), improve writing skills, and develop study habits that will carry over to their college work. Currently, CCHS offers a wide range of AP and Dual Credit Classes (Science: AP Biology; Math: DC College Algebra & Trigonometry, DC Pre Calculus & Calculus I; Social Studies: AP US History, AP American Government, DC American National Government, DC Comparative Politics; Engish: AP English Literature, DC English Composition I & II; Electives: AP Art, DC Introduction to Business, and DC Sociology).

AP and Dual Credit classes on your high school transcript show prospective colleges your readiness for college, your commitment to take rigorous courses, and your commitment to academic excellence.

Congratulations to Ryan, Marcos and Andrew (pictured left to right).
