Weighty Confession
Forgive Me for I Have Sinned
My step-mom teaches at a Catholic School and has described witnessing children's first confessions as being pecked to death by a flock of chickens. I promise my first confession will not be so painful! Here goes . . .
I could not stop eating goodies. Donut holes (at least 7 or 8), oatmeal-butterscotch apple cookies (very small cookies, at least 7 or 8), cashews (undetermined amount), 1, 2 maybe 3 bowls of cereal at breakfast, topped by ice cream at night.
All Is Forgiven, Move On . . .

Motivational Musing
Walking Backwards Through Life
Have you been meaning to build your quadriceps? (Its been on my to-do list for quite some time!)
Are you a bit wary of putting excess stress on your already messed up knees? (Mine are so messed up.)
Walking backwards takes the excessive stress off your knees, it reduces shear force AND it gives you a totally new perspective on things - a new point of view. Instead of moving closer to things, you are distancing yourself! (Cool!) You are moving towards your compelling future as you wave bye-bye, so long to the past.
Walking backwards is more than a reversal of the forward motion. It is a learned skill that requires practice. Youll be exercising a new motor pattern, so it takes concentration. Your mind will be involved, as well!
Walking Backwards Through Life may be a preferred route for you if you
1. are rehabilitating from knee surgery,
2. experiencing pain as you go up and down stars or hills,
3. suffer from muscle strains of the hip, groin, hamstrings or lower back (greater stretch when walking backward),
4. play sports that require running backwards (i.e. soccer, football, basketball),
5. play sports in which you need to work on your ability to change direction rapidly, or
6. are just plain bored and need a change of pace.
How to start moving backward through life?
Best to try walking backwards on a slightly inclined slope or ramped treadmill. At some point, you may even jog backwards.
Take 10 steps forward and 9 steps backwards (which should return you to your starting place). If this feels good, increase to 20 or 30 yards at a clip. Next, move to a slightly elevated place.
Dig it! Youre in good company!
Champion Boxer Gene Tunney ran four to eight backward miles a day in his training.
Muhammad Ali, known for his dazzling foot speed, used backward running in his roadwork.
What's your style of walking? Backward, forward, with a pedometer? Share your secrets with your fellow KITT Club members. Write OLofWL!

Righteous Recipe
Righteous Recipe ~ Grilled Cinnamon & Brown Sugar Apples
This recipe comes from KITT Club member Sammi B. "This grilled apple recipe is scrumptious - even better than a baked apple or even apple pie!"
Ingredients: 2 applices, cored and cut into 1/4 inch slices * 1/2 cup water * 1/4 cup lemon juice * 1/8 cup light brown sugar * 2 teaspoons cinnamon
Directions: Preheat grill to medium heat * place apple slices in a medium sized bowl with water and lemon juice (this prevents them from turning brown) for a couple of minutes * in a small bowl, mix cinnamon & sugar * drain apples and place them on grill rack * allow them to cook for 6 to 8 minutes on each side, turning once * remove from grill * sprinkle with cinnamon brown sugar mixture

Chewing the Fat
Dear OLofWL ~ I just love sweets - especially cakey things. Otherwise I eat well; lots of veggies and fish. And, I struggle - wondering "do I want to be thin, fit into my size 8 clothes and not eat things I enjoy," or "do I want to enjoy and settle for a 10?" I'm at a season in my life when my willpower to say no to sweets is very weak. What to do? Thanks for being there for so many of us, and I love your artwork!!! ~ Heather
Dear Heather ~ First, I'd like to say that you are fabulous whether your dress size is an 8 or a 10. And either way you can have cakey things now and again; and either way there is a limit to how much cakey things you can eat. No matter your size, you will have to say 'no' at some point.
If you say your willpower is very weak at this point in your life, it will be. Sounds like you might be giving yourself permission to eat more. The question to ask yourself is ... "What do I want? How strong is my want power muscle?" I hope you find peace in this and do not feel like you are settling. Embrace your fabulousness. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL ~ Regarding last week's KICK (What's in Your Mental Junk Drawer) ... O.K., I buy GIGO (garbage in; garbage out) but before I can recommend it to a friend, I need to know how to pronounce it.
Here are my choices:
1. GIGO (jijo-sort of rhymes with gigolo; and the image of a not too attractive male companion for sale sort of fits the garbage idea as do the soft (squashing like garbage) /g/ sounds
2. GIGO (long i and long o, and sort of rhymes with Geico but also sounds like a baby babbling)
3. GIGO simply spell it using letter names which makes one think of an army soldier, a G.I., doing something forceful and military, maybe on K.P. actually throwing out the garbage....I think this is my pick, but we need consensus on this and I'll go with what the majority wants. Talk about soft /g/ sounds.~J. Hall
Dear OLofWL (and Janice) ~ Yes! I want to use the phrase, but want to use it correctly. How is GIGO pronounced?
gig - ow
jee - joe
guy - go
guy - joe
jee - go
gig - oh
gij - oh?????
Please help - I'm just an analog girl in a digital world, and my music is round and vinyl! ~ THANKS! Darlene
Dear OLofWL ~ I am willing to use GIGO but how? What is the sound of the G? Garbage or giraffe? or do you just say the letters G I G O? ~ Thanks. Carol
Dear All . . . Our Lady of Weight Loss and Janice are mulling over your GIGO emails and will report next week on the official pronunciation. In the meantime, if anyone else has any thoughts on the GIGO matter (last week's KICK), please email Janice soonest!

Artella Magazine printed a special issue this summer called Artella: Body of Art. It includes 35 contributing artists and writers; 12 unique 'how-to' art projects and much more. For those who like to make art - design cards - look at other people's work - watch CD's with fun stuff on them - this mag (comes with a CD of artsy stuff) is well worth the purchase. Here's the link to my page: Concupiscence Cake. Concupiscence means "desire": the faculty of appetite is sometimes referred to as desire or concupiscence. It refers to the fact that each individual feels a lack of something within himself. To address this emptiness, he turns elsewhere for fulfillment.
Wow! Weight loss art with great meaning.

Janice's wise words and insightful perceptions helped to keep me focused as I learned to integrate the changes (and challenges) I have taken on in my new way of eating. With her support, I no longer live in fear of everything spiraling out of control. To date, I have permanently removed 22 lbs. (20 more to go), and I am feeling so much more grounded and centered in my life. I know I will make it! ~ S.A.
