Forgive Me for I Have Sinned

I passed a job application test and wanted to celebrate, of course! So I opened a ‘nice’ bottle of wine, enjoying it with small slices of cheese. Sipping, sipping, and inhaling the soft but pungent taste of sharp cheddar (room temp, of course!). After three 4-oz glasses of wine and all that cheese, my taste buds were screaming for – YES! Chocolate!  There was none in the house! BUT WAIT! I have a bulk vending business! The garage is FULL of chocolate!  I rarely, rarely – honest – ever touch it, but I did last night. In the morning, entering the kitchen, there on the island sat an opened bag of M&M peanuts! Remnants of a night gone wild.  God knows how many I ate! ~ Mavis D.A.

Set Your Table for Change!
Here are some great fat melting tips from Our Lady of Weight Loss's Arsenal for Mass Reduction ... and an excellent excuse (or reason) to go shopping! 

Use dark, small plates! Studies show that people will eat whatever is put in front of them and, in fact, they are actually left feeling more satisfied when using salad sized plates instead of dinner plates. In addition, using dark plates diminishes appetite.

In keeping with the 'keep me in the dark' theme, opt for a dark blue or black tablecloth or placemats

Use tall, skinny drinking glasses (vs. short and wide glasses). Researchers at the University of Illinois found that we will pour less into tall, skinny glasses than short and wide glasses, even though they hold the same amount of liquid.

Fill two vases with fresh flowers.  The first for your dining room table – to create a beautiful and relaxing experience. Choose flowers that delight and feed your soul.  The second one should be filled with fresh RED flowers and placed in the entrance to your home.  The red flowers with infuse you with energy upon entering and inspire you to cook up something fabulous on your clean stove. (It is clean, isn't it? Clean stoves give off good energy.)

Candles are always a nice touch for the table. Watch the flames flicker. Hypnotize yourself. "I am feeling quite sated now with one perfectly sized plate of delicious food."

White Asparagus with Honey Mustard Dressing from Jane P., NYC - Thanks Jane, Yummy!


Ingredients:  White Asparagus, 'Asperge blanc'--if you want to get fancy -- I found them on greenperu.com   Yes, they come from Peru. * Grey Poupon Mustard made with Real Honey
1 teaspoon=10 calories, 0 fat, sodium 5 mg.

Directions: Rinse asparagus. * Cut or break off the tough bottom ends of the stalks. * Then, break them in half.   Place in pot of boiling water for 2-3 minutes. (Do not let it get too soft. Steaming them is another option Then, use the Grey Poupon Honey Mustard as a dressing.

Dear OLofWL ~  We emailed back and forth two years ago regarding my purchase of a Our Lady Tee, since then I have continued to love your Monday newsletters, your book (loved it, loved it!!  In fact I bought two, one to share and the other for safe keeping. :) I have also made many of your crafts which have been "big...big hits" with friends. I have given a few "Our Lady" Vases to friends as gifts.

Okay here is my "HELP ME" request.....I am still battling my 22 years of self-destructive behavior with over eating and emotional eating.
 
My husband died two years ago of a self-inflicted injury at the age of 31. This was a total shock to everyone who knew this wonderful man.  He left me - our 17 year-old son and 4 year-old daughter. I knew I had to find the strength to rebuild our lives. Initially, I was not sure how to pick up the pieces and get this family together, but, I am happy to say that we have rebuilt our lives one step at a time and there is JOY...HOPE and life is good.

Here is the problem....when it comes to my fat and me .......I am a failure....I try....I try....I want to get motivated again. I want to let myself believe that I deserve to be healthy and fit again. When my darling passed away, I was 10 lbs from my goal weight. I am now 30 lbs from that goal. Why is it so hard for me to deal with this? I know I am one tough chick. I have proved that I can survive hell and back, but when it comes to me zipping my lips and saying "no thank you," I can't.

I need your help....I need to complete my "rebuilding."  I need to LOVE ME. Thanks for letting me vent, heal and start and finish this battle. ~ Andrea
 
Dear Andrea ~ I am so sorry for your loss.  You are most definitely one tough and strong chick.  I am touched and inspired by your determination to move forward, find joy in life, and refocus on giving yourself what is so important to you - YOU! 

Remember - weight loss is an opportunity for reinvention and transformation.  An opportunity to let you out from under. Ultimately, it's about YOU; not the fat.

Now I want you to know that you are a success.  You have taken care of all that needed to be taken care of successfully, and your next step is YOU.  You are right where you need to be on your journey, and you know that you have the ability to overcome tremendous obstacles. Feel proud!  With regard to weight, it's like you are playing an old fashioned record in your head and the needle is stuck in an old groove, and it keeps repeating itself.  (Wasn't that called "skipping?")

Let's start to explore making a shift here, right now. 

First, let's remove the word "try" from your vocabulary.  Trying implies failure.  If someone invites you to a party, and you say "I'll try to make it," you more than likely will not.  You've left an opening for an out.  So - again let's remove "try" from your vocabulary, and instead use the words explore and discover.

Now that you are in touch with the idea that this is more about exploration, discovery, reinvention, transformation, and emerging-self - know that you can do this.  Life is joyful and this journey is a part of your happy life.  I am excited for you.  A new you is about to emerge! Have FUN with this new way of being. Smile. :) ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL ~ Boy did The Answer (Kick #16, April 23) speak to me! I never realized that, I too, do the same thing...always opening the fridge in search of SOMETHING! Both the writing exercise and the meditation exercise you suggested have helped me tremendously.  I came up with an idea that forces me to question myself when I go to the fridge door.  I attached a small mirror to the door so every time I walk up to it, I see my reflection. This gives me a chance to make a conscious decision BEFORE opening the door. It seems to be working and before long I'll be out of the habit of scouring the fridge for answers!   Thanks for all you do! ~ Kim

Dear OLofWL ~ I went back to school!  I've got a bachelors in anthropology that doesn't fit so well into real-life jobs, so I've been going from job to job for the past ten years without feeling very fulfilled.  I've been a complainer and excuse-maker, saying that it's too tough, too expensive, and I can't go back to school to get my master's.  Well, this winter, I finally decided to get off my butt and do something.  I decided to work towards my master's as a physician's assistant. The first step was to enroll in a chemistry class at my local community college.  It has been an amazing experience!
 
What, you may ask, does this have to do with weight loss?  Well, working towards a long-term goal with my career has given me a major attitude adjustment.  Just like I used to whine about going back to school, I used to say 'I can never lose this weight.'  Waah.  NOT TRUE!  Since I've started school, I feel like I can accomplish anything!  And this new attitude adjustment has resulted in me losing over 10 pounds so far!
 
Many people feel stagnant in their jobs, and taking a class can make you feel like you're working towards something more in life.  Even if you're happy with your job, taking a class can be a cool change of pace, and you'll learn something new, whether it's chemistry or pottery!  It was just the jump-start I needed to lose the extra pounds!  Plus, while you're at school two nights a week, you're not at home munching on the couch!  ~ Jill S.

What is a creative act of weight loss?

It’s ANYTHING that you do that feels good and feeds your soul, other than eating (the ‘bad’ stuff - in excess - when not hungry).

I just spent the weekend with 20 other women at a Fiber Art Retreat.  What a blast!! We learned many different fiber related talents including felting, stamping, fabric collage etc.  It was great fun and with all these new techniques, I should be so busy working with my hands I won't have time to eat the wrong things. ~ Janice J.
