Us Your News! Canal Corridor Association is a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. CCA manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more. |
CCA President's Note Hello Everyone, With spring finally here, I hope you are starting to enjoy all the outdoor venues the heritage corridor has to offer. See the events list below for a rundown of activities.
The 109th Congress is in full swing, and two members of the Illinois delegation are taking the lead in reauthorizing the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor and securing funding for it. (Receiving funding from Congress is usually a two-part process, requiring both an authorization and appropriation.)
Congressman Jerry Weller (R-11-IL) plans to introduce legislation to reauthorize the heritage corridor for the next 23 years. (If you would like to look up last year's bill to get a sense of what the legislation entails, click here.) He is also seeking appropriations totaling $600,000 for Port of LaSalle projects. Congresswoman Judy Biggert (R-13-IL) is taking the lead on an annual appropriation of $1 million for the entire heritage corridor beginning in October of this year.
Their leadership in seeking funding for the heritage corridor is crucial because Congress did not act fast enough to provide funding last year. This federal funding will help keep developments in the heritage corridor moving forward and will help us be able to continue offering the many programs we do.
Please thank Congressman Weller and Congresswoman Biggert on behalf of the heritage corridor and ask the rest of the Illinois delegation to support their efforts.
Sincerely, Ana B. Koval President & CEO |
