Peppermint Kills

I generally end my food day with a nice, hot cup of flavorful tea. (Yes, even in the hot summer.) That’s right – once the tea is poured, the kitchen is closed and all thoughts of food are channeled into creative acts of weight loss.  (See this week's CAWL below.)

For a long time, I was into cinnamon tea (I highly recommend it), but recently, for variety’s sake, I switched to peppermint.  I noticed that I was not only enjoying its delectably sweet taste, but I was also getting off on its aroma.  A mighty duo, smell and taste!

Peppermint (mentha piperita) is a naturally occurring sterile hybrid mint - a cross between spearmint and water mint. It has a high menthol content, and is often used to flavor tea, ice cream, candy, (ahhh, love those peppermint patties – see calorie content below) chewing gum, and toothpaste.

In addition to its unique flavor, it is also valued for its medicinal properties. Peppermint oil (which comes from steam-distilling the plant’s leaves and stems) is used as a muscle relaxant, particularly in the digestive tract, and it helps to reduce inflammation in the nasal passages.

Peppermint may help to:

Treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome. - Its anti-spasmodic effect provides relief of abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and diarrhea.

Relieve nausea and vomiting. – Both peppermint tea and peppermint oil capsules anesthetize the stomach’s mucous lining.

Control flatulence and relieve diverticulitis. – Peppermint relaxes digestive spasms.

Reduce heartburn – The menthol strengthens the flow of digestive juices.

Fight bad breath – Apply a few drops of peppermint oil to the tongue. (If you are a more is more kind of person (vs. less is more), be sure to read CAUTION: Peppermint Kills below.)

Lessen muscle aches and pains. – Peppermint first stimulates the nerves by producing a cool sensation and then desensitizes the nerves that pick up the pain message, thus the brain is fooled. (Cool.)

Relieve congestion and cough due to the common cold and allergies.  – Peppermint reduces inflammation in the nasal passages.  Inhaling the menthol, while drinking peppermint tea, may also help to lessen symptoms.

Fight stress.  – When added to the bath, the aroma of the peppermint oil may help to relieve tension.
Caution: Peppermint Kills

Never ingest pure menthol (the main ingredient in peppermint oil).  Even one teaspoon can be fatal.

If you have a Hiatal hernia, stay away from peppermint oil. Symptoms will intensify!

Do not apply peppermint oil to the chest or nostrils of a child under five years of age. It can cause a choking feeling.

Stay away from peppermint if you have gallstones.

If you are pregnant, do not ingest large doses of peppermint oil.  It’s natural ability to relax can relax your uterus right into labor!

New Point of View:  Having a ritual to end my day will create a new, healthy habit that will help me to permanently remove excess weight.

Dear OLofWL ~ YES!  I've now read your book (instead of just buying it) and this is what I took from it: permanent fat removal involves all the senses of your life - sing it, paint it, dance it, break the route between the bakery frosting sighting from eye to mouth........! Anyway, I'm not much into handcrafts these days but the principle of "include the senses, the senses" has stuck. All the best, Pat McK.

PS: Down to 188 this morning, that's the bottom part of my plateau, my endless plateau that I have been (patiently) on since OCTOBER...... this time, I'm seeing the 180s as a giant chute (as in chutes and ladders) that I am passing through, even as I write this!

Dear Pat ~ Congratulations on permanently removing enough excess weight to see the 180s!  Your new perspective on how you experience/see/feel about the 180s is brilliant and will surely move you past your plateau.  Weight loss is a mind set and you have set your mind.  Yes, it is about creatively using all your senses and sense to lose weight.  Permanent fat removal is a creative journey - as you create the new you.  It's not about making crafts, per se.  It's about crafting the new YOU!  Permanent fat removal is a reduction sauce of self-love!  Permanent Fat Removal is an opportunity for reinvention and transformation! Thanks for reading the book as well as purchasing it. (HA!) I appreciate your support as the book was written straight from the heart - and it is a special book. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL ~  Regarding last week's KICK on TRYING - you make a really good point about how using the word "try" leaves a loophole. The word that works best for me is "learn".  In my quest to find a way to sustainably lose weight and get healthier, I've learned a lot of things that I wouldn't have expected, and I've changed a lot of things for the better in ways I would not have expected.  I'm a brown rice and whole grain fanatic - I look for (occasional) treats that also double as fuel for my body (one oatmeal raisin cookie instead of a big container of ice cream - and I now love a lot of veggies, since I've joined an organic farm share and have learned how to prepare veggies. Have a lovely, light summer! ~ Heidi from Springfield, MA

Dear Heidi ~ You sure learned a lot on your Journey to Sveltsville! I so appreciate your sharing your wisdom.  I especially like the idea of joining an organic farm share, as you not only clean up your food act, but you are socializing at the same time, with like minded souls.  Bravo on all counts! ~ OLofWL  PS:  I see you live in Springfield, Massachusetts. I'm scheduled to be teaching at Kripalu again next year ... a fabulous few days where you are sure to learn a lot without even trying!  Woo hoo.

* * *

Dear OLof WL ~ I have eliminated "try" for the most part, at least in this sense, from my vocabulary.  Another word I work against is "can't." "I can't do . . . " usually means I "choose not to!" By saying this I feel I'm being more honest with myself.  Because, of course, you "can" do anything you set your mind to no matter how difficult. ~ Kate S., St. Paul, MN

Dear Kate ~ Most excellent point.  A smart and enlightened point of view.  Being honest with oneself is key to permanent fat removal.  Well done and thank you for sharing! ~ OLofWL

Creative Acts of Weight Loss

What is a creative act of weight loss?

It’s ANYTHING that you do that feels good and feeds your soul, other than eating (the ‘bad’ stuff - in excess - when not hungry).

I love to go to yard sales!  Salt and pepper shakers are my thing.  And not because I use lots of salt and pepper.  No, I use them as mini-vases.  Perfect for a fun dinner party.  A different 'shaker' at each plate with one or two flowers in them.  Simply delicious! ~ Sammi K., CA.
