Hot Picks

Our friend Gordon is visiting (from Boston area).  I asked him, "What products do you like?" and he immediately started to wax poetic about Miracle of Aloe foot cream (he uses it for his hands as well).  He swears by it.  Gordon says it heals any rough spots, soothes irritation, it's not greasy, it's fragrance free, etc.  etc. etc.! Gordon doesn't get excited about too much, so I believe him.

What products excite you? Write me!

Upon returning, still buzzed from the week, I headed downtown to the Film Forum to see - FOOD INC.  - a MUST SEE documentary about the food industry.  See this week's Motivational Musings for more information.  It's wake up time!

FOOD INC.:  The food industry and you. A wake-up call!

Food, Inc. is a mind-blowing, stomach-twisting, eye-opening and ultimately heart-breaking film. See it - today!

Filmmaker Robert Kenner 'lifts the veil' on our nation's food industry. Our food supply is now controlled by a handful of for-big-profit corporations who seem to be far more concerned about making money than our health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of their workers or our environment.

This film is more than horrifying scenes of overcrowded slaughterhouses, where animals are forced to graze in pools of their own manure. This movie, for me, is about our most basic rights.

We are being just as manipulated by the largest corporations as the food we are being sold. It's wake up time!

The manipulation of foods and the feeding of livestock have manifested bigger-breasted chickens. 50 years ago it took 70 days to raise a chicken to slaughter. Today it takes 48. It's unnatural.

The country's top four meatpackers control 80 percent of the beef market. One single fast-food burger might have come from 400 different cows.

The gut of a cow fed on corn breeds the deadliest strains of E. coli, a harmful bacteria that makes an estimated 73,000 Americans sick annually; including the tragic death of Barbara Kowalcyk's young son Kevin, who died from e coli earlier this decade from an outwardly harmless fast food burger.

Farmers are subsidized to overproduce corn, which then goes into Coke, Sweet & Low, diapers, Motrin and cattle feed.

Obesity is at epidemic proportions, and diabetes is on the rise among children and adults alike.

You will be shocked to learn about what you eat, how it is produced and who we, as a nation, have become.

Our freedoms are being taken away from us. Open your eyes.

Now ... WATCH THE VIDEO.

More on what you can do!

This week's Coach Yourself Thin questions:

Chewing the Fat

Dear OLofWL ~   I have had to deal with a lot in the past 5 or so years - tough life things that ate away at me.   Unfortunately, I turned to food to fix my problems.  All that did was make me fatter than ever.  Your articles, your support and your sense of humor have helped pull me out of my hole.  Still, though, I am finding it difficult to stop looking to food for comfort.  Any ideas? ~ D.L.W.

Dear D.L.W. ~  The idea that food comforts is an illusion.  Food covers.  It covers our feelings, it pushes down our hurt, it distracts from our pain - but in reality - it does not comfort.  What does truly comfort?  Loving oneself, moving forward in life.  Living.  Eating for comfort is not living.  For more on how to find true happiness, do my happiness exercise (deep dish life pie).  It can create an opening for you to look at your life in a new way.  Let me know what you think! ~ OLofWL
