Kill Your Appetite . . . Now!

Instead of trying to kill your appetite (no need to be so violent) and treating it as though it were your mortal enemy, you might want to consider making appetite your friend. A valuable, intelligent friend who you pay attention to!

Having an appetite is a good thing; even thin people have appetites and they pay attention to their appetites, don't they?

In the past, you’ve paid attention to only half the signal from your appetite.  The “I’m hungry.  Feed me.” part.  That’s the part of the signal that tells you to eat. (Nothing wrong with your hearing on that one!)

When that feeling of hunger first starts to disappear, your appetite says, “I’m satisfied.”  It’s important that you pay attention to that piece of your friend’s advice. Did you note that I said when that feeling of hunger FIRST starts to disappear!?  That's right. You want to stop eating long before you are full.  The chances are that once you hit full, you have probably grossly overeaten and remorse is right around the corner.

(Personal Confession:  Before Our Lady of Weight Loss entered my life and introduced me to my friend, Appetite, I would eat until I couldn’t breathe. Gross, indeed!  And dangerous, too!!)

Now pay attention. You don’t want to feel full; you do want to feel satisfied.  Your appetite is your friend.  Your appetite tells you when you are hungry and when you are satisfied.  Listen to your appetite.

Your eating is no longer driven by emotions.  Now that you have met your friend, Appetite, you can be in close contact with her as she guides you to ‘satisfied.’ 

New Point of View:  Your appetite doesn’t need to be killed off. There's no place or need for violence in the Land of Permanent Fat Removal!

Watermelon Martini-Fizz ~ What better way to end the day than a watermelon martini! Or vigin-tini, if you like.

Ingredients:  watermelon, 4 cups diced * 1.5 ozs. vodka * 2 tablespoons lime juice from fresh lime * 1/3 cup ginger ale (diet is you want to stay away from the sugar)

Instructions:  Puree watermelon in blender. * Divide into 4 glasses. * Add vodka, lime juice and ginger ale.  (Hold the vodka if you like and have a virgin-tini.

Update on the on-line group. Dear OLofWL ~ Sometimes it only takes one time to learn a lesson, but for others it seems it takes more than once. God keeps giving me this one, because I don’t seem to catch on.
 
Even though I know better, I gravitate to any new tool or toy that comes on the market in my quest to lose 30 pounds. Most recently, Alli (Orlistat) came on the market. It is a FDA approved over-the-counter weight loss aid. The Orlistat reduces the absorption of fat in the foods that you eat. Sounds peachy. It does come with very sophisticated materials and good advice about gradual weight loss. I thought it would be a great addition to my Weight Watchers plan and exercise regime.
 
My experience with this aid has been awful. Yes, you will lose weight , but Orlistat gives you loose bowels, horrific gas and an oily discharge. They call these symptoms “Treatment Effects.” I was afraid to leave the house lest I get caught out without a bathroom. By the third day I stopped taking Orlistat because I was afraid to eat. (Another way to lose weight? Is that what they intended?) For the past two evenings right around 7 p.m., I get lightheaded and shaky and crave sugary foods.
 
A few days later, I am still feeling the effects of Orlistat. I am dehydrated, headachy and still need to know that there is a bathroom wherever I go. This stuff is not cheap $67.00 for 150 capsules. You are supposed to take 3 a day. Might as well set up a cot in the bathroom. So lesson learned the hard way! Again! ~ Gretchen

Dear Gretchen ~ I totally understand the pull towards the elusive magic bullet.  Alas, there is none.  Permanent Fat Removal is a reduction sauce of self love.  It's about setting your heart and your mind so that they beat in unison (mind set & heart set - oh, I like that!). I'm bettin' you finally learned your lesson, and hopefully, others will follow your lead! Thanks for your candid account of your oily ordeal. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL ~ Regarding last week's Kick:  As a long-time sufferer of GERD, I did want to pass along that peppermint is very bad for acid reflux disease.  It relaxes the muscles, the ones that are supposed to keep the stomach acid down in the stomach.  I was very disappointed to hear this as I have always loved mint, and mint tea, but I do notice the difference now that I am mint-free.  My doctor said that although it seems like mint tea soothes the stomach, it really isn't a good idea. - Liz

Dear OLofWL ~ I have taken to adding 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon (depending on size of bottle and taste desires) of Peppermint extract to my water bottle. Way cheaper than $2.00 a bottle for "mint water" at the deli and very refreshing. Not mouthwashy but beneficial to the breath. And … drum roll please… seems to curb my appetite! ~ Dana C.
