REVIEW:  2009 Edition : the Calorie King CALORIE FAT & CARB Counter ... includes 200 Fast Food Chains & Restaurants.  -  For me, Calories Rule and weight loss is a simple scientific equation.  Calories In; Calories Out.  And now that there is a book that's small enough to toss in your bag, that lists the calorie count of every food from A to Z, as well as fast foods and carnival foods, there's no excuse for 'not knowing!'  Take responsiblity!

My favorite section is EATING OUT: Fair and Carnival Foods - it's very entertaining!

Happy Weight Loss

Hi Tushketeers ~  Running late this morning, because I am writing from North Carolina, and my computer couldn't pick up signal due to clouds.  Ohhhh ... and yesterday, we walked through the White Pines and we had to check for tics afterwards!  That was exciting.  I love the country!

I trust you had a de'lite'ful holiday - whether in the city or country! For those who fell off the wagon, "All Is Forgiven, Move On!" - the weekend is over, behind you.  And for those who made it through unscathed ... congrats and do share any and all winning strategies with us!  (write OLofWL)

Speaking of making it through major challenges; how about American Idol running over this week.  Those who taped it missed the best performance of the night!!  Adam Lambert!  And speaking of Adam Lambert there's a lot of stupid buzz "is he gay?"  Like HOLA!  If he's NOT, who is?  And does anyone care?  Your opinion please!

And, yes, once again, I am inviting you to join us at Kripalu Institute for my workshop (April 26-29) in the Berkshires, Massachusetts, at which time YOU will change your relationships to food; free yourself from the insanity - a.k.a. your 'evil twin;' change your thinking/your mind; and learn self-hypnosis techniques AND have FUN.  Yes, FUN and weight loss are NOT mutually exclusive.  I don't mean to be a broken record, but I know that my workshops (if I say so myself) are fabulous.  Life changing for some.

This week's Kick is a potpourri of hot topics - from the 'War on Obesity' to "My Arse Hurts!" to an incredibly delicious and healthy broccolini and pasta recipe.  PASTA ! HURRAY!!!!

MOTIVATION TIP:

Governor Paterson Declares War ... On Obesity!!!
Oh Goody! Just what we needed; another War! There's the War on Terror, War on Poverty, War on Drugs ... and now the War on Obesity!

Governor Paterson announced in a recent press release that he is declaring "War on Obesity."

Governor Paterson, in case you haven't noticed, "WAR" does NOT work! Anything that has the word "WAR" stenciled across its forehead is a sure sign of the PAST MASQUERADING AS THE FUTURE!

The Past Masquerading As the Future?
Yes! Exactly. An interesting concept; worthy of exploration.

Governor Paterson is planning to 'combat' obesity by declaring war on it. This is a failed strategy, which has been attempted again and again. Although we can, of course, learn from past events, we can also get trapped into relying on outmoded, failed strategies. How many times do you have to 'hit' the escape button on your computer before you realize that the darn thing just doesn't work?

The future, my friends, is filled and overflowing with new possibilities. The future hasn't happened yet. The future can be a place where paradigm shifts occur!

Governor Paterson, the past is already filled with one war after another on obesity. Enough already with war!

We must learn a new language.
When asked if she would join an anti-war march, Mother Theresa declined. She said that instead she would join in a peace rally. She understood that if we use the word 'war' we are, through our words, creating war. Get the difference?

Sit back for just for a moment and let the words "war" and "peace" resonate. What feelings float to the surface when you hear the word war? What feelings when you hear the word peace?

Let us not war on our fat, because inevitably we are warring against ourselves. We can love our excess pounds away! We need to be kind to ourselves and our bodies. Yes, obesity is problematic, but losing weight must be framed from a perspective of compassionate caring about our health and our bodies.

Let us be peaceful warriors as we undertake the task of creating health in our society.

Most importantly, we create the world we live in by our thoughts and beliefs, as the words we use are powerful living entities.

Genesis 1:3 (Hebrew) "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light."

All things considered, we have the power to create a new, compelling and healthy future ... starting with our thoughts and words.

Governor Paterson, your first step in promoting health is to change the conversation. Let us operate out of positivity and hope. By clinging to antiquated concepts and words, YOU ARE the past masquerading as the future.

Spread the word ... NOT the icing,
Janice

How to STOP Eating! I  know that nighttime eating is a prob ... (oops, almost said problem) ... it's a challenge for many of us, so I thought I would share my number one secret as to how to stop eating at the end of the day.

Before I share this vital information, I want you to know that it has worked for me for close to 8 years now. I used it during my weight loss journey (50 pounds gone 4ever!), and I now use this strategy as part of my maintenance plan. ... READ ON!

Walk!  Relieves Constipation. Cures Impotence! From stress reduction to less incidence of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, the benefits of walking are amazing! Some even say walking relieves constipation and helps cure impotence.

Walking stimulates the brain release endorphins and increases the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, the body's natural mood elevator. Literally, walking makes us happy. ... READ ON!

Chewing the Fat

Hey Janice (and Our Lady of Weight Loss) ~ I just discovered your website through BeliefNet.com and it’s great. I am a 56yr old woman who lost over 100 lbs about 5 years ago through the process of gastric by-pass surgery.  I have kept if off all this time until recently.

I moved from Los Angeles to Portland, Oregon 3 years ago and have been slowly putting weight back on (40lbs, to be exact).  I’m devastated, depressed and can’t stop eating sugar.

Yes, I’ve had this addiction my entire life and actually was a member of OA for almost 8 years.  I have had some huge challenges this past 3 years including a pay cut of almost $50K, back surgery, job loss and so on or should I say, “blah, blah, blah”, excuses…..

In addition, I just celebrated 19 years of sobriety in AA.  Why can’t I work the program around the food?  Any ideas, suggestions?  I know how to reach out for help and so I’m asking you, a perfect stranger
to let me know if God throws a few words your way on my behalf.  My relationship with God is good, I’m connected but I’m thinking it can’t be that good if I’m into addictive behavior with the food.  Yikes!  Thank you, in advance for any help you can send my way. I will listen, and I will take action.  I am just feeling pretty defeated at the moment. ~ Peace, A. O'D.

Dear A.O'D ~ First, congrats on your 19 years of sobriety in AA.  Major accomplishment!!!  You are a star! AND .. If I had a nickel every time someone said that they have everything under control except food, I'd have a million bucks, for sure!  As we know addictions are 'easy' in that you are eliminating, staying away from, never having again one item (i.e. alcohol or cigarettes), whereas food is not eliminated.

The first thing I would advise is that you do make a list of your red light foods and red light situations and steer clear of them.  Make your home your safe haven (I've written about this before and will again). Watch your language.  Every time you say "I can't" - say "I don't know how to ... yet"  ... and then seek a solution.  For the most part, weight loss is a mind-set.

I could write volumes on this and have and while it is not my intention to turn this into a commercial for my book, I do honestly think that All Is Forgiven, Move On is filled with so many wonderful ideas/concepts/recipes that can help you.  It's a fairly cheap investment in yourself.   Do write me again, after you've made your home your safe haven ... for the next steps!  ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL ~ (Re: last week's KICK): You can't take my Kathy Ireland away from me!   That is obviously Kirsty Ally in that photo - not Kathy from Sports Illustrated, no way!   Our Lady has gone too far lately bursting my bubble by showing every one of my 80's TV or Magazine lusting mine all fattened up and confessing.    Our Lady, stop doctoring up photos just to sell website clicks!   ~  Dave from Chicago

Dear Dave ~ Yes, the truth is hard to take at times.  Not to worry; your sex idol, Kathy, is back in shape and thinking of you!  Thanks for the fun email.  ~ OLofWL

Righteous Recipe

Broccolini : This dish is sooo healthy, you can feel the vitamins rushing through your body! AND it's so delicious, "you can die happy," as my mother would say.

Ingredients: 1/2 lb. broccolini * 2 teaspoons olive oil * 2 cloves of garlic, minced * 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper * 1/2 lb. canned plum tomatoes (without packing liquid) * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil * 2 tablespoons fat-free heavy cream * One cup cooked pasta. Your choice of shape.

Directions:  Chop the broccolini into one-inch lengths and steam; set aside. * Heat olive oil in wok. * Add garlic and red pepper. * When the garlic looks 'gold,' add tomatoes and salt. * Mix the tomatoes in until they start to lose their shape. * Add the basil and milk. * Let thicken for about one minute. Add broccolini and heat through. * Add to pasta and serve. For instructions ... click here
