After enjoying my Lean Cuisine entree, I needed to fix something quick & easy for the family's dinner, so I prepared some sloppy joes. Well, dear hubby picked up McDonald's drive thru on his way home from work, and my teen daughters ran out the door to a birthday party with friends. Tired and lonely -- I thoroughly enjoyed two of the hearty, fat filled sandwiches on some nice white, wonderbread rolls -- they are called MAN-wiches after all! ;-)

Speaking of Nuts . . . (No, not your brother, sister, aunt, uncle or even mother!)
I wondered, as you might wonder, if nuts are as high in calories and fats as they say they are, why are they including them on their diet plans? (And who are they anyway?)
Heres the scoop on the nuts . . .
Yes, the fat in nuts is pretty high (50%), but it is mostly monounsaturated fat the good kind - that helps increase HDL levels in the blood. Most nuts and seeds are naturally low in saturated and trans fatty acids the two types of fats that are dangerous to the heart and arteries.
Nuts eaten in small amounts may help to control your appetite.
The fat and protein combo satiates for a longer period of time than carbohydrate snacks. The stomach empties more slowly and the fiber content gives you a sense of fullness.
Consider including nuts and seeds as part of your daily fat requirement, rather than the usual vegetable oils, margarines or animal fats like butter.
Now, dont go completely nuts! Remember, one tablespoon of nuts equals one fat serving.
The Dos and Donts of NUTS!
- DO sprinkle a tablespoon of nuts or seeds on your salad.
- DO add a tablespoon of nuts or seeds to your sandwich. Nice n crunchy.
- DONT eat nuts or seeds that are roasted in oil! Its double trouble!
- DONT buy nuts or seeds that look old or have mold on them. (Did I really have to tell you that?)
- DO eat your nuts and seeds in a reasonably short amount of time, one month tops, lest they get rancid.
- DO try walnut or pumpkin oil for a variety of taste. Use them sparingly and do not heat them (lest oxidation will occur).

Righteous Recipe
MANGO & JICAMA SOUTH OF THE BORDER SALAD from KITT Club member in good-standing, Heidi L., Texas!
This is so easy and oh so delicious. Jicama, is a root vegetable that tastes like a cross between an apple and a potato (sort of).
INGREDIENTS: 2 ripe mangos * 1 medium jicama * 1 medium English cucumber * 1/4 cup lime juice * Zest from lime * * 2 tablespoons honey * 1/2 cup canola oil * salt to taste
INSTRUCTIONS: Peel the mango, jicama and cucumber and then cut into bite-size pieces and toss them into a large bowl. Combine the lime juice, zest and honey in a blender at low speed and drizzle the canola oil until the dressing is slightly thickened. (You don't have to use all the oil!) This makes a yummy dressing and you can salt to taste, if you like. Pour over mango mixture, toss, serve.

Dear OLofWL ~ I saw you this morning on "Naomi's New Morning" (Hallmark Channel). I, too, was an obese child. In my college years, my mother made my wardrobe. When I lost weight, I took that wardrobe made of heavy cloth, and I cut my clothes into squares, sewed them together and made a large quilt. It brought me great joy to see how my old clothes could "re-cover" me in a different way. - V.J.K.

Dear OLofWL ~ For whatever reason, the "never blow your nose at the table" rule (Kick #11 - How Ill-Mannered Are You?) was not on the list of prohibited activities where I grew up - probably because my mother was so overworked, where we blew our noses was not as important as did we blow our noses when they needed it.
However, I learned about the lack of this instruction when I was in Thailand on a meditation retreat. I had a terrible cold and the spicy food had me needing to blow my nose every other mouthful. Ideally, I would have been eating alone, but our one meal a day was not allowed outside the dining hall. At one point, after a particularly loud blow, a very dignified, proud, Thai lady turned and read me the riot act in Thai, which needed no translation despite my complete lack of the language.
Needless to say, despite the lack of enforcement of this rule in my home of origin, it does seem to be a global understanding that one should never blow one's nose while eating in the presence of others. I certainly never will again, even if it means missing the only meal of the day.

Dear OLofWL ~ Last month I hosted a co-op board meeting, and I kept the left over snacks in the cupboard and they called me until I ate them! BUT!!! This month, when I hosted an open house for visitors to my Art Studio, I wasn't tempted by the snacks, because I was busy taking with people! When everyone left, I took all the leftover snacks plus as well as some unopened bags and took them to the garbage pail outside. This time "I WON OVER THE SNACKS". Score one for Bernette R. from Brooklyn!

What is a creative act of weight loss?
Its ANYTHING that you do that feels good and feeds your soul, other than eating (the bad stuff - in excess - when not hungry).
I saw this fabulous purse, hand crocheted, that I just had to make. But I haven't crocheted since my old hippy days...lots of shawls with fringes then! That didn't stop me, oh no. Bought some cotton yarn, a hook and sat down to work. I've spent hours hooking and ripping - hooking and ripping. I now have lots and lots of wiggly yarn. All ripped out. No purse yet. Still - I can't eat while hooking and ripping. - PG, Tomahawk, WI.
