Self Hypnosis Stew

Remember that all patterns in life begin for a reason.  Somewhere early on, more than likely between birth and 8 years of age, you found that food soothed, relaxed, kept you busy and happy, filled you up and was your friend.  This message was absorbed like a sponge into your unconscious mind and became an unconscious belief.  You believe that food equals comfort.  You believe that food equals love.

And now, when something upsets you, or you find that you are feeling lonely or unhappy, you automatically reach for food, even though your conscious mind tells you not to.

Are you stuck in this pattern now? Do you want to change?
One way to start to implement change is to send a new message to your unconscious.  A strong message, that at the same time not only respects how your unconscious mind has been protecting you but is grateful as well.  You might say the following words to your unconscious mind.

“Thank you for protecting me and for your good intentions.  I understand that you have been doing what you think is best for me.  In fact, in your own way, you have been taking care of me.  For this I am eternally grateful.  I am not exactly sure how this came to be, but I am certain that you had good reason to protect me in this way.

“Nevertheless, I need for those old reasons, patterns and beliefs to be left in the past, where they belong.  I now need to formulate a new pattern for my present and future.  Please, help me to move forward, while leaving the past safely in the past – where it belongs. The responsibilities of these old behaviors are now finished.”

You might want to repeat this to yourself a number of times during the day.  Or even tape record this and download it onto your I-Pod, so that you can quietly and privately listen to your own voice telling sending this very important message to your unconscious mind.

This is a form of self-hypnosis.  You are more than capable of setting your mind, making the adjustments that need to be made so that you can now make wise food choices.

New Point of View:  My unconscious loves me and is doing a bang up job of protecting me.  Now that I understand this, I see that no battle ensues within; rather a lack of communication.  I now can communicate with my unconscious mind and say thank you for your love and protection.  Here’s what I need now . . . .  (you fill in the blank!)

What message would you like to send to your unconscious mind?

Janice's honesty, compassion, professionalism and sincerity to help came through in each phone session. Her coaching skills are tremendously effective in all areas:  weight loss, relationships, career - LIFE!  I learned much more about myself than I expected; specifically, the root cause of my anxiety (which was causing me to overeat). ~ Heather D.B.

The insightful nature of what Janice was able to glean from me and reflect back to me was so much more than any of my many other attempts with counseling and group work.  I am filled with hope and peace each day, as I watch my body catch up to my spirit.   ~ KF

Righteous Recipe

Feeling Crabby Salad - Whenever my husband is crabby, I whip up a platter of FCS and say ever-so-sweetly, "I made 'Feeling Crabby' salad.  Woud you like some, or are you crabby enough?"  I learned this type of communication from my mother, the Queen of Sarcasm. I swore I would never, but there you have it. I've turned into my mother. It's inevitable.

Ingredients:  1/4 cup lemon juice * 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar * 1 tablespoon sugar * 1 large cucumber, seeded and sliced thin * 1/4 cup fresh mint, finely chopped * 16 ozs. crab meat * 4 cups of lettuce (ice berg, romaine, whatever!) * 4 lemon wedges

Directions:  In a small bowl, combine the lemon juice, vinegar, sugar, cucumber and mint. Add the crab and toss some more. Divey up the lettuce on small plates and place a nice big spoonful of 'Feeling Crabby Salad" on top.  Garnish with a lemon wedge.  And serve!!

Regarding last week's KICK: Why YOU Want to Be Fat

Dear OLofWL ~ I'm so glad you asked! Yes, I want to be fat and these are my reasons: Carrying around two people makes me tired and I have an excuse to be lazy. * Since I can't fit into a bathing suit, I can avoid getting my hair wet swimming and don't have to endure being splashed or possibly drowned. * I find that I'm invisible in a room full of men and they won't hit on me which makes my husband feel sooooo secure.

Why does anyone practice self-defeating behaviors like eating too much and moving too little? There is real psychology to successful weight-loss, and I will be very interested in hearing your response.  Making the changes could take years of therapy which is just as much work as losing weight.  I find I am fat because I am lazy and complacent, pure and simple.  But, Oh, how to change???? - Sue T.

Dear Sue ~ I don't believe that people are intrinsically lazy and/or complacent.   Make your weight loss journey about reinvention and transformation. Shift your focus.  It's not about the food; it's not about the scale. Those are the symptoms. Please read (or re-read) the above Motivational Musing - Self-Hypnosis Stew - and let me know how it might open up a fresh way of viewing this challenge.  I'm happy to continue the conversation! ~ OLofWL

* * *

Dear OLoWL - In January of this year, I joined Weight Watchers and faithfully stuck to the program, enthused and energized.  I continued for 16 weeks to lose 20 lbs.  When I had to give a short speech about the fact that I was going to make it (another 70 lbs,) I felt very arrogant that "I was going to continue to lose each week and nothing would stop me!"  I felt like a jerk right after I said it, and the next morning, I woke up and it was like a switch had been turned off.  I had absolutely no interest in going back or continuing the plan.   I realized at that time that the reason I was fat was TOTALLY in my head!

After this week's newsletter, I did do some soul searching and know the reasons why I am fat.  It's a hard thing to admit to strangers, let alone myself.  They say you can't blame someone else for you being fat.  But I do.  (Those words made me fat...I Do).  Anyways...I am not sure how to get beyond that.  It makes me very sad.  I continue to constantly think about food and what the magical answer will be.  I will be a sucker for every gimmick that comes along.  I even tried Alli HOPING it would give me diarrhea to lose weight!  Food and dieting are always on my mind.  Yes...my conscious mind and subconscious mind are at war.   Keeping that armor up............PL

Dear PL ~ It is very scary to believe in oneself; to declare to the public that you will do something - to go after and to accomplish your goals; to CLAIM what is YOURS, particularly if you have seemingly failed on other occasions.  So, rather than lose the entire 90 pounds and take the risk of making it and creating real change, you back off and stop. In some crazy way, it saves you from a worse pain - losing all the excess weight and gaining it back or finding that life-in-general may not being what you imagine it will be after the 90 lbs. are gone.  That excess layer serves as protection. When you declared that you were going to get rid of it [excess layer], your unconscious mind swept in and protected you.  Use your armor and weapons to beat the fear away, instead of using your armor to shut down and beat yourself up. ~ OLofWL

* * *

Dear OLofWL ~ I think last week's "Kick" is an especially good one.  It set me to wondering if you hear from men.   It was the "protection from men" statement.  Perhaps men might eat because they fear relationships with women, but most weight loss issues and exercise programs are aimed at women.  I wonder how men worry about the same issues, and if some might contact you because their female partners (is that politically correct?) receive your e-mail. ~ Glo.

Dear Glo ~  True, men are not in the majority in the KITT Club membership roster, but nevertheless, I know for a fact that you are out there.  So guys, Does your partner forward this email to you? Are you a member?  Tawk to us.  We're listening.  What's your beef? Why are YOU fat? ~ OLofWL

* * *

Dear OLofWL ~ For those who bellyache about Alli or Xenical take a tip,first do your homework, read about the products and talk to your doctor.  The person who took Alli for merely three days and had so many complaints, did not fortify them self first with info. I was placed on Xenical when it first came out.  Not for weight loss, but because I had IBS coupled with many health issues. I've had surgery twice on my intestines, placed on Xenical twice in the past. I am now on it for the third time this time twofold - for intestinal problems and to lose weight. Not everyone is successful with diet alone and need help whether it's bypass or a lap job.  There are sucess stories out there, and these aides should not be knocked. I tried them all and found myself at peace with Xenical. I am not an advocate of all these schemes of quick weight loss pills and diets or for Alli or Xenical just resent knocking!  've read your book ,enjoy your E-mails and believe in you. ~ RG, Albany

Dear RG ~ For the record, I am for people doing what is best for them.  If Xenical works for you; if you have consulted a responsible doctor - then great.  You are the captain of your own ship.  I have no judgment.  But as a hypno-coach, I reiterate.  When it comes to weight loss, there are no magic bullets.  AND even if these drugs or surgeries help, one still has to go inside and work on the whys and wherefores of how they got heavy (some dangerously so) in the first place, or they run the high risk of losing large sums of weight and then gaining it back.  So for those who are seeking a quick fix, an easy way to weigh less, a way to avoid the challenges of life, to circumvent their emotions, I say this: In order to succeed at permanent fat removal (vs. weight loss - if you lose it; you may find it!), you have to go inside and approach this from a new point of view. ~ OLofWL

Deadline: July 31, 2007  / Entry Fee: NONE - Great prizes

A Lesson I've Learned
  - We've all had them. Those “life lessons” that make us stop and think and possibly see the world, our environment, or even ourselves in a different light; the lessons we'll never forget. Some call them “Aha” moments.

Who was your mentor? Was it a teacher, a parent, or your best friend who helped to open your eyes and heart to learn? Maybe even a boyfriend? Or was it man's best friend; a pet? No matter who taught you, or how you learned, we all agree that over time, they are truly unforgettable. What is that one particular lesson that stands out in your mind? Did it change the course of your life, or maybe it wasn't life-altering, but it helped to shape the person you are today?Whatever you lesson, send us your story by entering our contest and win prizes!

"When I called on Janice, I had been stuck at the same weight for close to three months.  I had reached that plateau that many reach, where one loses their footing on the road to healthy weight loss. Allowing myself to take a long three month break from my diet when Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled around and I got off track. During the 4 weeks that I worked with Janice, I lost 7 pounds and since then, have been much better adhering to my weight loss plan. Things make sense again.  I felt supported, listened to, and encouraged by our four talks.  It was a gift to myself speaking to Janice and I recommend her coaching to anyone who wants more support and guidance and help." ~ Rosemary R., Greenwich Village
