Verse of the Week
For as the sky soars high above the earth, so the way I work surpasses the way you work, and the way I think is beyond the way you think. Just as rain and snow descend from the skies and don't go back until they have watered the earth, Doing their work making things grow and blossom, producing seed for farmers and food for the hungry, So the words that come out of my mouth not come back empty handed. They'll do the work I sent them to do, they'll complete the assignment I gave them. Isaiah 55:11
Tavya Benjamin Intern Attorney
Sophomore Tavya Benjamin spent Mini Mester with the Christian Law Association. In addition to helping with office work, she was able to meet clients and learn more about religious liberties. She met a pastor that has led a person to the Lord every day for the last four years! Tavya enjoyed her week in the law office, and is interested in pursuing a career in law.

Interact Members Attend Rotary Luncheon

Wednesday Jackie Miller (12) and Lindsay Rapp (11) attended the Clearwater Rotary luncheon and represented Calvary Christian High School. They were able to share about some of the volunteer work they have done. Jackie shared about her recent trip to Guatemala, and Lindsay about her mini-mester trip to San Francisco where they painted a mural at a shelter.

Accreditation Visit

This week CCHS was pleased to host our ACSI accreditation team. One of the accreditation criteria was to develop a project to work on over the next five years. After much study, research and prayer, the CCHS ASP (Accreditation by School Project) team presented a project focusing on writing and critical thinking. For the presentation, the team decorated the meeting room with the theme of "Declaring War on Poor Writing" and had a number of camouflage decorations and military signs. The team, pictured here, donned their team camouflage shirts for their presentation to the accreditation team. ASP team members are (left to right) Mrs. Mantooth, Dr. Cathey, Ms. Ewbank, Mr. Seals, Ms. Billman, and Mrs. Sardone.

Christian Signs!

In a public ceremony, senior Christian Bibi Ndongo signed with Central Florida Community College last Friday. Pictured here with Christian are Dr. Cathey, Coach Bintz, Dan and Marsha Mullett, Christian's sponsor family.

Kudos Theresa Linnert

Senior Theresa Linnert recently learned that she is the reciepient of a $500 scholarship as the Pinellas County winner of the 2008 "What's Bugging You?" Youth Achievement Award. She was evaluated on the essay as well as achievements, volunteerism and interests outside of school work. The scholarship was sponsored by Middleton Lawn and Pest Control. Her topic? Bad Grammar. Congratulations Theresa!

What is Mission Work, Anyway?

by Tom Olney, Parent

Our mini-mester trip to Costa Rica's coastal town of Jaco was the first mission trip for many in our group, and to be honest, I was a little anxious about what would be expected of me.  I envisioned hardship and squalor and "uncomfortable" situations with local witch-doctors, or worse... weird food.  What we all found instead is that each of us had talents and interests that were put to use every day - and that it was actually a lot of fun.  Some were skilled at fixing and painting - so they did that.  Some were skilled at entertaining children - so they did that.  Some were good at organizing and facilitating - so they did that.  Some could catch fish (REALLY BIG FISH) - so they did that, and shared their catch with us for dinner.  Some even could teach others how to surf - so Mr. Bettelli did that.  What did I do?  I brought a camera and a Frisbee.  What can God do with that?  A whole lot!  I took pictures - lots of them.  The kids took pictures, too.  We also played Frisbee in a dried out river bed surrounded by trash and rocks and had the best time!  I learned first hand that God can use whatever you have.

I was feeling a little guilty about how much fun I had, and even prayed about it.  Just this morning, I was reading my devotional, and God provided this word to me:
"Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light." (Matthew 11:29-30, NLT)

We learned from the local missionaries David & Pamela Knapp that missions has two wings: work and relationships, and you must have both to be effective.  With a team, we were able to accomplish both parts and even have some fun!  BTW, the food was phenomenal - Costa Rica 0 - Gringo Missions Team - 1.

What is mission work?  It's doing what God wants you to do.  He promises that it will provide rest for your souls - and that is what we all experienced - in spades.

Lindsay Rapp Wins First Place

Congratulation Lindsay Rapp (class of 2009) who recently won first place in districts and statewide in the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Awards sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.  Lindsay's oil painting will represent the state of Florida in a national judging that will take place in June, in St. Louis, Missouri.

The ASCI Art Festival, which CCHS hosted last month, was a huge success.  Many schools were represented and many talents were displayed.  We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Lindsay Rapp (class of 2009) for achieving "Best in Show" for her clay sculpture entitled, "Cellist".  Nice job, Lindsay!
