SaveFirst to Expand Tax Preparation Effort in Upcoming Season

SaveFirst is working to establish new partnerships with campuses and community organizations in cities across the state of Alabama--quickly growing into one of the most successful volunteer tax preparation efforts in the state.  Our new campuses for the 2008 tax season will include Huntingdon College, Jones Law School (Faulkner University), and Alabama State University in Montgomery; Spring Hill College and the University of South Alabama in Mobile; Calhoun Community College in Decatur; the University of Alabama at Huntsville; and Auburn University. We are continuing to grow our efforts at The University of Alabama, Samford University (and Cumberland Law School), Birmingham-Southern College, and UAB.

If you would like to get involved, please contact Sarah Louise Smith, SaveFirst Coordinator, at slsmith@impactalabama.org.

FocusFirst Staff and Volunteers Will Provide Vision Screenings for Children in All 67 Counties of Alabama this Year!

In three years of operation, our FocusFirst staff has grown from two full-time personnel to five full-time and five part-time personnel.  This incredible expansion will enable us to provide vision-screenings for pre-K children in all 67 counties this year.

We are excited about Alternative Spring Break 2008!  Two ASBs will take place May 16-20, 2008.  One group will screen the Upper Sand Mountain area in Northeast Alabama and visit Chatanooga. The other group will screen in Southwest Alabama and visit Gulf Shores.

If you would like to come along or know someone who would, please contact Katie Dean, our FocusFirst Administrator, at kdean@impactalabama.org or 205-934-0664.

UA and UAB Commit to Provide Full-Tuition Scholarships to All Future SpeakFirst Graduates!

The SpeakFirst “all-star” debate team is proud to announce incredible new partnerships with the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

In May 2008, the inaugural class of eight SpeakFirst participants will graduate from high school, with four participating students graduating each subsequent year.  Both universities have agreed to provide, in perpetuity, Birmingham students completing at least three years of the SpeakFirst Program with full, four-year, academic scholarships, including tuition and fees.  These scholarships cover approximately $30,000 of cost for each student over a four-year period.

We are extremely grateful to President Robert Witt and Provost Judy Bonner at UA and President Carol Garrison and Provost Eli Capilouto at UAB for providing these opportunities for our students.
