Yup, there's a 3 legged coyote, I hear tell!  Haven't come across him yet, and truthfully, that's okay with me! 

FYI ... for those who were having a good chuckle at my lack of driving skills, please note that I can now make left-handed turns into traffic.  Well, not into traffic ... but you know what I mean!

Who Got Kicked Off American Idol?

Some described her as weird, quirky, and even kooky. Some loved her style, some not so much. But all agree that Siobhan Magnus could belt it out, hit those notes, hold them and sing!  Last night, Siobhan Magnus was voted off American Idol. One of the things I like most about Siobhan is her authenticity, her level of comfort with herself. As Oscar Wilde said, "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken." And Sioban did just that! I'm hoping we will see more of her!

I'd mentioned in the last KICK that Weight Loss Counseling is a tax deduction.  A bunch of y'all wrote me, asking for more info.  So ... here follows an excerpt from the IRS website.  Needless to say, but I'll say it anyway - I am not an accountant.  You definitely should check with your accountant to make sure all the 'i's are dotted and 't's crossed, and then write me for a free consult!

Here's what the IRS site said:   You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay to lose weight if it is a treatment for a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, hypertension, or heart disease). This includes fees you pay for membership in a weight reduction group, weight loss counseling as well as fees for attendance at periodic meetings. You cannot include membership dues in a gym, health club, or spa as medical expenses, but you can include separate fees charged there for weight loss activities.

You cannot include the cost of diet food or beverages in medical expenses because the diet food and beverages substitute for what is normally consumed to satisfy nutritional needs. You can include the cost of special food in medical expenses only if: The food does not satisfy normal nutritional needs; the food alleviates or treats an illness, and the need for the food is substantiated by a physician.

Dear Our Lady of Weight Loss ~   I am about to turn 45 in a couple of weeks. I am 5'6" and  I weigh2 91 lbs. I have never weighed this much in my life. I have been trying to "be healthy" this year. I have numerous health problems that I know are attributed to my weight; I have hypertension, water retention, sleep apnea, GERD (reflux), and other things that aren't attributed to my weight: I had a total knee replacement in 2007, quit smoking in 2007, and in 2009 I had a seizure (first one ever) and I broke my right humerus (the bone between the shoulder and elbow) and have had 2 surgeries to repair it. Unfortunately, I now have nerve damage in my right arm so I can't work. My physical therapist has a medically-oriented gym, but she doesn't want me to do any other exercises other than walking on the treadmill for right now.  

I watch what I ate (mostly) and drink water.  I've been busting my big fat butt to get healthy, but I'm only gaining weight. What am I doing wrong???  I'm already on medication for depression and anxiety and all I'm doing is getting more depressed and anxious about my weight. I drink lots of water but it all seems to go to my legs.
 
Now that I've vented all my drama and issues...what do I do? I would appreciate any suggestions from you. I'm running out of options.  Thank you ~ AB
 
Dear AB ~  If you are following a healthy food plan/weight loss plan and you are gaining weight, then you need to make an appointment with your doctor and discuss the matter with her/him.  The pills (see this week's Motivational Musings FAT PILLS) could be a problem, but honestly, they're not the whole enchilada.   You wrote that you (mostly) watch what you eat.  Are you on a specific plan?  Are you true to it 90% of the time? 80%?  When you go off plan, how far off do you go?  

It is my experience, having worked with literally thousands of people to help them to permanently lose weight, that when one is not on a specific healthy eating plan, then they don't lose.  Loosey Goosey doesn't work.  I hope that helps ... and let us know what your doctor says.  Please keep us in your loop.  We are with you every ounce of the weigh.  :)  ~ OLofWL

asked another editor. "How do we expect to turn a profit?"

"Don't worry," he assured me. "These books appeal to a wide
audience."

Righteous Recipe

Carrot Chickpea Tagine

Have you noticed just how fabulously healthy, easy and 'lite' OLofWL's recipes are?  Here's another that is a mere 230 calories (approximately) per serving.  And wowzer, with a little rice and a salad on the side - it makes for a great lunch or dinner. 

Ingredients
1 Tbsp olive oil
1/2 cup sliced onions

1 1/2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 cup carrots, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch coins
1 cup low-sodium vegetable broth
1/2 cup pitted green olives, halved
12 pitted prunes, cut into halves and then halves again
Salt to taste.

Instructions
Heat a medium-sized pan over medium heat. * Add oil, then onion and ginger.  Cook until onion softens, about 3 minutes (maybe 5?) * Add cardamom, cinnamon, and cayenne.  * Stir and cook for 30 seconds.  *  Add carrots, chickpeas and broth.  * Cover and summer until carrots are almost tender, about 8 to 12 minutes. * If Tagine is a bit dry, then add a bit of broth.  * Go easy on the salt.  You really don't need much because this Tagine is bursting with flavor!
