FASTCASE Remote Access Is Now FREE To HCLL Subscribers!

A portion of FASTCASE, a national case law database, is available as a pilot program at no charge to Hennepin County Law Library subscribers in 2007 to search FROM THEIR OFFICES.

Try it now!  Go to the Law Library web site at hclaw.co.hennepin.mn.us and click on the FASTCASE logo on the home page.  Enter your Law Library barcode number as your User Name and your last name (lower case) as your Password.  Call 612-348-3024 if your barcode is not recognized by the system or if you are a subscriber and do not have a barcode.

Databases in the pilot program include:

  • Minnesota cases since 1874 (including unpublished cases)
  • 8th Circuit cases since 1924
  • Minnesota U.S. District Court cases since 1912
  • U.S. Supreme Court cases since 1790

At the FASTCASE home page, we recommend that you click on “Advanced Caselaw Search” because it offers more options than the “Quick Caselaw Search”.  The other search options on the FASTCASE home page (Search Statutes, Search Regulations, etc.), are links to the official websites of each jurisdiction and are not actual FASTCASE databases.

At the “Advanced Caselaw Search” screen, choose the highlighted radio button “S.Ct, Fed. 8th Cir. MN” to do a combined search on all the free databases available to you, or choose the radio button “Individual Jurisdictions” and click on the appropriate box to search these databases separately.

Other options from the “Advanced Caselaw Search” screen include a button to search for a specific citation, a section to enter date restrictions, a section to choose how you wish to have the cases sorted (e.g., by relevance or by decision date) and a listing of the Boolean search operators available.

FASTCASE documents can be printed in dual columns.  Use the “print/save” icon on the FASTCASE screen and not the print button on your browser.

We urge you to try FASTCASE during the 2007 pilot program and give us your feedback.  We will offer training sessions beginning January 2007.  Watch our Web site for the training schedule.

LLMC Digital Now Available Remotely

HCLL subscribers now have another database they can access remotely, LLMC-Digital.  LLMC has been a publisher of legal materials in microfiche format since 1976.  They are now converting all their titles contained in microform to a digital format and making it available online.

LLMC-Digital focuses on publications from U.S. federal and state governments.  It includes many federal administrative agency decisions and older state case reporters.  Documents can be retrieved by citation, and the collection is searchable.  LLMC-Digital includes titles such as:

  • Congressional Record (permanent edition, from 1990 forward)

  • Attorney General of the U.S. Opinions

  • Agriculture Decisions

  • Board of Contract Appeals Decisions

  • Environmental Administrative Decisions

  • Federal Communications Commission Reports

  • Federal Trade Commission Decisions

  • National Labor Relations Board Decisions

  • Northwestern Reporter 1st Series (and 1st series of each Regional Reporter)

  • Patent and Trademark Office Decisions

  • SEC Docket

  • U.S. Court of Claims Reports

  • U.S. Statutes at Large

Miller’s Standard Insurance Policies Annotated Now Available At HCLL

Many of you know the print version of Miller's Standard Insurance Policies Annotated as the bulky, multi-volume set with the long list of standard insurance policies annotated with reported cases linked to specific provisions.

HCLL has just purchased the "Expert" CD-ROM version of the product for use in the library (it does not circulate).  The CD-ROM version allows for keyword searching and printing of forms and annotations, along with the standard Miller's Index.  Policy provisions are hyperlinked to annotations, so they both can be viewed at once.

Read more about Miller’s Standard Insurance Policies Annotated at the Miller's Web site.
